Simon Russell Beale is an English actor. His roles include the films Persuasion (1995), The Gathering (2003), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), My Week with Marilyn , The Legend of Tarzan , The Death of Stalin , Museum , Operation Finale , Mary Queen of Scots (2018), Radioactive (2019), A Christmas Carol (2020), Benediction , Operation Mincemeat (2021), The Outfit (2022), Thor: Love and Thunder , Firebrand (2023), and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale ; the shows A Dance to the Music of Time , Dunkirk , Spooks , Penny Dreadful , Vanity Fair , Mary & George , Douglas Is Cancelled , and House of the Dragon ; the made-for-tv movie Alice in Wonderland (1999); and stage performances.

He was born in Penang, the son of English parents, Julia Mary, a doctor, and Captain, later Lieutenant-General, Sir Peter John Beale, KBE, QHP, FRCP. His father was in the Army Medical Services at the time of his birth, later becoming Surgeon-General of HM Armed Forces. Simon was raised mostly in London, England.

Simon’s paternal grandfather was Basil Hewitt Beale (the son of Ernest John Beale and Mary Emily Hewett). Basil was born in Hackney, London. Ernest was the son of Bransum Beale and Sarah Sharpe.

Simon’s paternal grandmother was Eileen Beryl Heffer (the daughter of Henry Robert Heffer and Harriet/Harriett Elizabeth/Emily Cooper). Eileen was born in Romford, Essex. Henry was the son of Robert Heffer and Eliza Ann Robinson. Harriet was the daughter of Alfred Cooper.

Simon’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Winter.
