Stéphane Dion is a Canadian diplomat, academic, political scientist, and politician. He has been President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, from January 25, 1996 to December 11, 2003, Leader of the Liberal Party, and Leader of the Opposition, both, from December 2, 2006 to December 10, 2008; Minister of Foreign Affairs, from November 4, 2015 to January 10, 2017; Canadian Ambassador to Germany, from May 1, 2017 to June 1, 2022; Special Envoy of Canada to the European Union, from 1 May, 2017 to 1 October, 2025; and Canadian Ambassador to France and Monaco, from 1 June, 2022 to 16 December, 2025; as well as, a Member of Parliament for Saint-Laurent—Cartierville/Saint-Laurent (QC), from March 25, 1996 to February 6, 2017.
Stéphane’s mother, Denyse (Kormann), was a French-born real estate agent, who likely had German ancestry. Stéphane’s father, Léon Dion, was a Canadian political scientist, of French-Canadian descent. He is married to political scientist Janine Krieber, with whom he has a daughter, who is adopted.
Stéphane’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Dion (the son of François Joseph Candide Dion and Marie Louise Dubé). Thomas was born in Saint-Arsène, Québec, Canada. Candide was the son of François Marie Dion and Mathilde Bérubé. Louise was the daughter of Frédéric Dubé and Marie Valérie Morin.
Stéphane’s paternal grandmother was Marie Alice-Eugénie Dancause/Dancausse (the daughter of Prudent Dancause/Dancosse and Octavie Paradis). Alice-Eugénie was born in Kamouraska, Québec, Canada. Prudent was the son of Augustin Dancosse and Marie Émilie Saucier. Octavie was the daughter of Jean Paradis and Clarisse Gagné.
Stéphane’s maternal grandfather was named Emile Kormann.
