Sterling Morrison was an American guitarist. He was one of the founding members of rock band the Velvet Underground. He played electric guitar, and occasionally bass guitar, and sang backing vocals. John Cale and Lou Reed were also members of the band.
He was the son of Anne Marie (Renison) and Holmes Sterling Morrison. Sterling was married to Martha, until his death, and had two children.
Sterling’s paternal grandfather was George Leonard Morrison (the son of Holmes Omer Morrison and Annie Jones). George was born in St. Francis, Aroostook, Maine. Holmes was born in Maine, the son of Canadian parents, John Morrison and Margaret Morton. Sterling’s great-grandmother Annie was born in New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of John James Jones, whose father was from Golftyn, Flintshire, Wales; and of Eunice Jane West, who was from Nova Scotia.
Sterling’s paternal grandmother was Eunice Mullins (the daughter of James Mullins and Sarah Ellen Moir). Eunice was born in Saint John Plantation, Aroostook, Maine. James was born in Maine, the son of William Joseph Mullins, who was Irish; and of Elizabeth Diamond, who was born in Campbellton, Restigouche, New Brunswick, to a family from Massachusetts. Sterling’s great-grandmother Sarah was born in Allagash, Aroostook, the daughter of Thomas Moir and Elizabeth D. Gardner, who were Canadian, from New Brunswick; and who both had roots in Scotland and Colonial Massachusetts.
Sterling’s maternal grandfather was Robert Hugh Renison (the son of Thomas Renison and Ellen Jane McCormick). Robert was born in Westbury, Nassau, New York, to Irish parents, from Antrim. Thomas was the son of John Renison/Rennison and Ann Jane McElroy. Sterling’s great-grandmother Ellen was born in Cubbindall, Ballymoney District, the daughter of Thomas McCormick and Jane Craig.
Sterling’s maternal grandmother was named Mary E. Quinn. Mary E. was born in New York City, New York.
