James was the son of Frank Altice and Alice Maude Simpson, and had deep roots in the U.S. Summer’s great-grandmother Ethelyn was the daughter of George Wilmot Tagg, whose parents were English; and of Anna May Vandeburg, who maternal grandparents were also English.
Summer’s paternal grandmother was Wilhelmina Katherine Mautz (the daughter of John Mautz and Elizabeth Rose Kiss). Wilhelmina was born in Los Angeles, California.
