Syl Apps was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A centre, he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL).
He was the son of Mary Swan and Ernest Overy Apps. He was married to Mary Josephine, with whom he had five children, including professional ice hockey player Syl Apps, Jr. Among his grandchildren are competition rower and Olympic champion Darren Barber, minor league ice hockey player Syl Apps III, and ice hockey player Gillian Apps. Gillian is married to ice hockey player Meghan Duggan.
Syl was also a second cousin of philanthropist Murray Dryden, and a second cousin, once removed, of Murray’s sons, professional ice hockey players Dave Dryen and Ken Dryden , who was also a politician, businessperson, and author. Syl’s maternal great-grandparents, James S. Dryden and Mary Irvan Swan, were also Murray’s paternal great-grandparents.
Syl’s paternal grandfather was Charles Overy Apps (the son of William Apps and Harriet Overy). Charles’ parents were born in Sussex, England. William was the son of Edmund Apps and Henrietta Philcox. Harriet was the daughter of Charles Overy and Mary Bourner.
Syl’s paternal grandmother was Charles Gurney (the daughter of Charles James Gurney and Mary Anne Hill). Syl’s grandfather Charles’ parents were English. Syl’s great-grandfather Charles was born in Buckinghamshire, the son of Charles James Gurney and Janes Knibbs. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Hill and Martha Sear.
Syl’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Wrigley (the son of Sylvanus Fearns Wrigley and Isabella Stoddard). Sylvanus was born in Lancashire, England, the son of Jospeh Wrigley and Ann Fearns.
Syl’s maternal grandmother was Jane Grieve Dryden (the daughter of James S. Dryden and Mary Irvan Swan). Jane’s parents were Scottish. James was the son of Andrew Dryden and Janet Carins. Mary was born in Roxburgshire, the daughter of Jared Swan and Jane Grieve.
