She was the daughter of Pietje Hendrika and John Nicolaas Kristel. She had a son with her former partner, Belgian author Hugo Claus.
Sylvia’s paternal grandfather was Nicolaas Josephus Maria Kristel (the son of Jan Kristel and Lambertina Maria Josepha Ruigrok).
