Tavi Gevinson is an American writer, magazine editor, singer, and actress. She wrote fashion blog Style Rookie, and founded, and was editor-in-chief of, online teenage girl-aimed magazine Rookie. She has also had roles on the shows Scream Queens and Gossip Girl , and in the films Enough Said , Goldbricks in Bloom , Person to Person , and Shortcomings .
Her father, Steve Gevinson, is an American-born teacher, and is from an Orthodox Jewish family, of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent. Her mother, Berit Engen, a weaver, is Norwegian, from Oslo; Berit was raised a Lutheran, and converted to Judaism in 2001. She is a part-time Hebrew teacher.
Tavi was raised Jewish and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
Tavi’s paternal grandfather is Harry Gevinson (the son of Benjamin Gevinson and Anna Mitchell). Harry was born in Virginia, to a Russian Jewish father and a Polish Jewish mother.
Tavi’s paternal grandmother is Marcella Grossman (the daughter of Max Grossman and Pearl Aronov). Marcella was born in New York, to a Russian Jewish father and a Polish Jewish mother.
