Teddy Riner is a French heavyweight judoka. He has won nine world championships in the heavyweight (+100 kg) division, two openweight world championships, and one world championship with the French men’s team. He has won a record twelve gold medals at the World Judo Championships, as well as three Olympic gold medals, two Olympics gold medals as part of a team, and two Olympic bronze medals. He is nicknamed “Teddy Bear,” “Big Ted,” and “Big Teddy.” He is 6′8″.
Teddy was born in Pointe-à-Pitre, on the Carribbean island Grande-Terre, in Guadeloupe, the son of Marie-Pierre Melgard and Moïse Riner. He grew up in Paris. Teddy is a cousin of French rapper Doc Gynéco. He has two children with his partner, model Luthna Plocus.
Teddy’s paternal grandfather is Maurice Riner “Ti-Maurice” (the son of Maurice Félicien Riner and Félicie Bernardine Ramsamy). Teddy’s grandfather Maurice was born in Vieux-Habitants, Guadeloupe. Félicie was the daughter of Sylvestre “Albert” Cécé and Hélène Ramsamy, who was the daughter of South Asian Indian immigrants.
Teddy’s paternal grandmother was Brunette Grenot (the daughter of Tiburce Anastase Grenot and Clémence Gervina Varin).
Teddy’s maternal grandfather is named Pierre Alexandre Melgard. Pierre is from Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe.
Teddy’s maternal grandmother is named Berthe N. Padilla. Berthe was from Lamentin. She had Spanish ancestry on her father’s side.
