Terry Sanford was an American politician and educator. A member of the Democratic Party, he was Governor of North Carolina, from January 5, 1961 to January 8, 1965, President of Duke University, from April 2, 1970 to July 4, 1985, and a U.S. Senator from North Carolina, from December 10, 1986 to January 3, 1993.
He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1972 and 1976 .
Terry was the son of Elizabeth Terry (Martin) and Cecil Leroy Sanford. He was married to Margaret Rose Knight, until his death, with whom he had two children.
Terry’s paternal grandfather was named James D. Sanford.
Terry’s paternal grandmother was named Lou W. Oates.
Terry’s maternal grandfather was named David Terry Martin.
Terry’s maternal grandmother was Gillie Wilson Darst (the daughter of Thomas Welch Darst and Margaret Rebecca Glendy). Thomas was the son of Benjamin Darst and Elizabeth Welch.
