Theo Epstein is an American baseball executive, attorney, and consultant. He was director of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres; general manager, and then executive vice president & general manager, of the Boston Red Sox; and president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs, of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Theo is the son of Ilene and Leslie Epstein (Leslie Donald Epstein), a novelist. His sister is writer Anya Epstein. Theo is married to Marie Whitney, founder and creative director of Two Penny Blue; with whom he has two children. Anya is married to actor Dan Futterman .
Theo’s paternal grandfather was Philip G. Eptein (the son of Henry Epstein and Sarah Groneberg). Philip was a screenwriter, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Casablanca (1942), along his twin brother Julius J. Epstein, and Howard Koch. Henry was born in Russia, the son of Myer Epstein and Gussie Zietz. Sarah was born in Russia, the daughter of Louis Groneberg and Dorah Roder.
Theo’s paternal grandmother was Lillian Ella Targan (the daughter of Herman Targan and Clara). Lillian was born in New Jersey, to parents from Russia.
