Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, soldier, explorer, naturalist, author, and reformer. A Republican, he was the 26th President of the United States , having served from September 14, 1901 to March 4, 1909. He was elected to the position in 1904 . He was previously Vice President of the United States , from March 4, 1901 to September 14, 1901. He was elected to the position in 1900 . He initially took over as President upon William McKinley’s death. He was also New York State Assembly Minority Leader, from January 1, 1883 to December 31, 1883, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, from April 19, 1897 to May 10, 1898, and Governor of New York, from January 1, 1899 to December 31, 1900.
He was the Bull Moose Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1912 (also known as the Progressive Party), and was the Progressive Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1916 , although he refused the latter nomination.
President Roosevelt was the son of Martha “Mittie” (Bulloch), a socialite, and Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., a prominent businessperson and philanthropist. His father was born in New York. His mother was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Southern parents, from Georgia. He was a brother of socialites Bamie Roosevelt and Elliott Bulloch Roosevelt, and poet, writer, and lecturer Corinne Roosevelt Robinson.
President Roosevelt was a fifth cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt , who served as President of the Unites States, from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945. Theodore’s great-great-great-grandfather, Johannes Roosevelt, was a brother of Franklin’s great-great-great-grandfather, Jacobus Roosevelt. The brothers’ parents were Nicholas Roosevelt and Heyltje Jans Kunst. Theodore’s niece, political figure, diplomat, and activist Eleanor Roosevelt (Anna Eleanor Roosevelt), was Franklin’s wife. She was the sister of Theodore’s brother Elliott. President Roosevelt had six children, one with his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt, who died shortly after giving birth, and five with his second wife, Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt, to whom he was married until his death. His great-granddaughter, professor Susan Roosevelt Weld, was married to Governor of Massachusetts, Bill Weld . Another of his great-granddaughters is literary agent Melanie Jackson, who is married to novelist Thomas Pynchon .
President Roosevelt’s patrilineal line can be traced to Maerten Cornelius van Rosenvelt, who was born, c. 1595, in Haarlem, Noord-Holland, Nederlands, and to his wife Cornelia Lodewyck, who was also born in Haarlem.
President Roosevelt’s paternal grandfather was Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt (the son of James J. “Jacobus” Roosevelt and Maria Van Schaack). Cornelius was born in New York, New York, and was a prominent businessperson. He was of mostly Dutch descent. James was the son of Jacobus/Jakobus Roosevelt and Annetje/Annatje Bogert. Maria was the daughter of Cornelius Van Schaack, Jr. and Angeltie/Angelica Yates.
President Roosevelt’s paternal grandmother was Margaret Barnhill (the daughter of Robert Barnhill and Elizabeth Potts). Margaret was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Robert was born in Warrington, Bucks, Pennsylvania, the son of John Barnhill, who was born in Ireland, with roots in County Antrim; and of Sarah Craig, whose father was also born in Ireland. President Roosevelt’s great-grandmother Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Potts and Elizabeth Lukens, who had German ancestry.
President Roosevelt’s maternal grandfather was James Stephens Bulloch (the son of James Bulloch and Anne Irvine). His father, Archibald Stobo Bulloch, was a lawyer, soldier, and statesman, who was a Delegate from Georgia to the Continental Congress, in 1775, and Governor of Georgia, from April 15, 1776 to February 22, 1777; his own father was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and his own mother’s family was also Scottish. President Roosevelt’s great-grandfather James’s mother was Mary “Polly” De Veaux. President Roosevelt’s great-grandmother Anne was the daughter of John Irvine, who was born in Cults, Scotland, and of Ann/Anne Elizabeth Baillie, who was also of Scottish origin.
President Roosevelt’s maternal grandmother was Martha Stewart (the daughter of Gen. Daniel Stewart and Susannah/Susanna Oswald). Martha was born in Newport, Liberty, Georgia. Daniel was born in Tranquil Plantation, Newport, the son of John Stewart and Susanna/Susannah. President Roosevelt’s great-grandmother Susannah Oswald was born in Newport, the daughter of Joseph Oswald and Anne/Ann Carter, whose own parents were Thomas Carter and Mary.
President Roosevelt was a third cousin, once removed, of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassin Lee Harvey Oswals . President Roosevelt’s maternal great-great-grandparents, Joseph Oswald and Ann Carter, were also Lee’s paternal great-great-great-grandparents.
