Thomas Mitchell was an American actor and writer. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Stagecoach (1939).
He was the son of Mary (Donnelly) and James E. Mitchell. His nephew, James P. Mitchell, was a Republican Party politician and businessperson, who was U.S. Secretary of Labor, from October 9, 1953 to January 20, 1961. He was married to Ann Stuart Breswer, until his death.
