Frederick was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. His father, James Edwin van Wyk, had a mother was born on Saint Helena. His mother, Tyla’s great-great-grandmother Maria Olive Elizabeth Lyne, was the daughter of an English father, born in Dulwich, Surrey, and a mother born on Saint Helena.
Tyla’s great-grandmother Irene was born in Pietermaritzburg, the daughter of Ernest William Smith, whose parents were also from Saint Helena; and of Julia Buttier, who was born on Mauritius. Ernest also had distant roots in Bengkulu, Indonesia.
