Tyla is a South African singer and songwriter. She is known for her songs “Getting Late” and “Water.” She has been dubbed “Queen of Popiano.”

Tyla was raised in Johannesburg, Gauteng, the daughter of Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal. She is from a Coloured family of Zulu, Indian, Mauritian, and Irish descent. Tyla and her grandparents are pictured here .

Tyla’s paternal grandmother was Marie Van Wyk (the daughter of Frederick James Lamond Van Wyk and Irene Elizabeth Smith). Marie was born in Durban, Ethekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and had many ancestors who were Coloured people of Saint Helena, descended from slaves. Frederick was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. His father, James Edwin van Wyk, had a mother was born on Saint Helena. His mother, Tyla’s great-great-grandmother Maria Olive Elizabeth Lyne, was the daughter of an English father, born in Dulwich, Surrey, and a mother born on Saint Helena.

Tyla’s great-grandmother Irene was born in Pietermaritzburg, the daughter of Ernest William Smith, whose parents were also from Saint Helena; and of Julia Buttier, who was born on Mauritius. Ernest also had distant roots in Bengkulu, Indonesia.

Tyla’s maternal grandfather was named Lawrence Jasmin.
