Victor Wembanyama is a French professional basketball player. A center and power forward, he plays for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was previously with French clubs Nanterre 92, Centre Fédéral, ASVEL, and Metropolitans 92. He was the first overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NBA draft. He is 7′4″, which makes him the tallest active NBA player. He is also known as “Wemby” and “The Alien.”
His father, Félix Wembanyama, is a track and field athlete, and his mother, Elodie de Fautereau, is a basketball player and coach. His father was born in Belgium, and has roots in Sankuru province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. His older sister, Eve, and his maternal grandparents, are/were professional basketball players.
Victor’s maternal grandfather is Michel de Fautereau-Vassel (the son of Eric Georges Lucien De Fautereau-Vassel and Madeleine Dunoyer de Segonzac). Madeleine was born in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, Haute Vienne, Limousin, the daughter of Henri Jean Joseph Charles Dunoyer de Segonzac and Marie Magdeleine Desvaulx. Victor is related to the noble Dunoyer de Segonzac family.
Victor’s maternal grandmother is named Marie Christine Hunziker.
