Vince Lombardi was an American professional football coach, executive, and player. He played for the Wilmington Clippers and the Brooklyn Eagles. He was the head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers, whom he famously to multiple titles in the 1960s; and head coach and executive vice president of the Washington Redskins, of the National Football League (NFL). The NFL Super Bowl trophy is named after him. He was also an assistant coach for Salesianum School, St. Cecilia HS (NJ), Fordham, and Army, as well as head coach for St. Cecilia; and was an offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.
Vince was the son of Matilda “Mattie” and Enrico “Harry” Lombardi, who had a butcher shop. His father was born in Salerno, Campania, Italy. His mother was born in New York, to parents who were born in Vietri di Potenza, Potenza, Basilicata, Italy. He was raised Catholic. Vince was married to Marie Planitz, until his death, with whom he had two children. His grandson is professional football player and coach Joe Lombardi.
