She was mostly raised in Scotts Valey, California, and then Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Her family were religious Pentecostal Christians.
Weyes’ paternal grandfather was Philip Colgan Mering (the son of Sumner Needham Mering and Helen Boschke Colgan). Philip was born in Sacramento, California, and was a prominent attorney and civic leader. Sumner was the son of Charles Sumner Mering and Esther L. Needham. He was of half German, with distant Dutch; one quarter Scottish, and one quarter Channel Islander, from Guernsey, descent. Weyes’ great-grandmother Helen was the daughter of Edward Power Colgan and Mary Ellen Smith. Her father was of half German and half Irish ancestry, while her mother was of mostly British descent, including Scottish nobility through William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry.
Weyes’ paternal grandmother was Laura Wiley Haynes (the daughter of Henry Ralph Haynes and Ruth Helen Biersch). Laura was born in Merced, California.
