William A. Wheeler was an American politician and attorney. He served as Vice President of the United States , from March 4, 1877 to March 4, 1881. He was elected to the position in 1876 . He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1861 to March 3, 1863, and again, from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1877. He was a member of the Whig Party, then a member of the Republican Party.

Vice President Wheeler was the son of Eliza H. and Almon Wheeler. He was married to Mary King, until her death.

Vice President Wheeler’s paternal grandfather was Zalmon Wheeler (the son of Joseph Wheeler and Frances Hill). Zalmon was born in Connecticut. Joseph was the son of Joseph Wheeler, whose paternal grandfather was English; and of Abigail Perry. Frances was the daughter of William Hill, whose paternal grandparents were born in England; and of Abigail Barlow, whose maternal grandparents were English-born.

Vice President Wheeler’s paternal grandmother was Hannah Butler (the daughter of Thomas Butler and Jane White). Hannah was born in Connecticut. Thomas was the son of John Butler and Sarah Foster, whose paternal grandfather was born in Devon, England. Jane was the daughter of Ruloff/Ruluff White, who was of English and Dutch descent; and of Maritjen/Marritje “Mary” Knickerbocker, who had Dutch ancestry.

Vice President Wheeler’s maternal grandfather was named Capt. William Woodward/Woodworth. William fought in the Revolutionary War.

Vice President Wheeler’s maternal grandmother was named Lydia Danforth.
