William Jackson Harper is an American actor and playwright. His roles include the films That’s What She Said , True Story , Paterson , They Remain , Lost Holiday , Midsommar , Dark Waters (2019), We Broke Up , Landscape with Invisible Hand , and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ; and the shows The Electric Company , The Good Place , The Breaks , Jack Ryan , American Dad! , Dogs in Space , The Underground Railroad , Love Life , The Resort , A Man in Full , and The Morning Show . He wrote the plays We Live Here and Travisville .

He uses his mother’s maiden name Jackson for his stage middle name. He was raised in Garland, Texas.

William’s paternal grandmother is Cecelia Ann Dawson (the daughter of George Dawson and Elzenia Arnold). Cecelia was born in Texas. George learned to read at the age of 98, and was known as “America’s favorite poster child for literacy.” He wrote the autobiography Life Is So Good (2000). George was the son of Harrison Dawson and Mattie Nichols.
