William Sulzer was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1895 to December 31, 1912, and Governor of New York, from January 1, 1913 to October 17, 1913. He was nicknamed “Plain Bill Sulzer.”

He was The American Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1916 . He was also a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1912 .

William was the son of Lydia (Jelleme) and Thomas Sulzer. His father was German, from Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Wurttemberg. His mother was born in Sneek, Súdwest-Fryslân, Friesland, The Netherlands. His brother, Charles August Sulzer, was also a Democratic politician, who was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Alaska Territory, from March 4, 1917 to January 7, 1919, and again, from March 4, 1919 to April 15, 1919. He was raised on the family farm.

William was married to Clara Rodelheim. Clara was of German Jewish descent.

William’s maternal grandfather was Peter Jellema/Jelleme (the son of Jan Murks Jellema and Tietje Pieters Westra). Peter was born in Sneek, Súdwest-Fryslân, Friesland, The Netherlands. Jan was the son of Murk Jans Jellema and Maaike Hettes.

William’s maternal grandmother was Charlotte Reinstra (the daughter of Emke Rientjes Rienstra and Lijkeltje Bauwkes van Dijk). Charlotte was born in Friesland.
