Xherdan Shaqiri is a Swiss professional footballer. A winger and attacking midfielder, he plays for FC Basel. He was previously with FC Basel II, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Stoke City, Liverpool, Lyon, and Chicago Fire, and the Swiss national team.
Xherdan was born in Gjilan, in present-day Kosovo, to an ethnic Albanian family. His family moved to Switzerland in 1992, living in the small town Augst, canton of Basel-Country, near the French and German borders. His father worked in construction. His mother was a cleaner. His brother, Arianit Shaqiri, is a youth football coach, who founded PrioSocc Academy.
Xherdan is a Muslim.
