Yitzhak Rabin was an Israeli politician, statesman. and general. He served as Prime Minister of Israel , from 3 June, 1974 to 21 June, 1977, and again, from 13 July, 1992 to 4 November, 1995, when he was assassinated. He was also Ambassador to the U.S., from 1968 to 1973, Minister of Labor, in 1974, Minister of Communications, from 1974 to 1975, Minister of Welfare, in 1975, Minister of Defense, from 1984 to 1990, and again, from 1992 to 1995; (de facto) Leader of the Opposition, from 20 February, 1992 to 13 July, 1992; Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, in 1992; Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, in 1992; Minister of Religious Affairs, from 1992 to 1995; Minister of Education and Culture, in 1993; Minister of Internal Affairs, from 1993 to 1995; and Minister of Health, in 1994; as well as, a Member of the Knesset, from 14 January, 1974 to 4 November, 1995.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1994, with Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat . “The Peacemakers” won Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 1993. Yitzhak was one of four persons chosen to represent that title, along with Arafat, F. W. de Klerk , and Nelson Mandela .
Prime Minister Rabin was the son of Rosa (Cohen) and Nehemia Rubitzow/Rabin. His parents were Jewish emigrants from the Russian Empire, his father from Smidowitz and his mother from Mogilev, Belarus. Prime Minister Rabin was married to Leah Rabin, until his death. The couple had two children.
